Every few years, an event comes along that invites both locals and visitors to see Lake Como in a new light, and the Lake Como Walking Festival 2026 promises to do just that. With its blend of scenic trails, rich storytelling, and a dash of adventure, this festival is not just about walking—it’s about traveling through time and tradition. Scheduled from March 29 to November 6, the 2026 edition of the Lake Como Walking Festival spotlights the bicentennial of navigation by boats and the region’s renowned textile tradition, offering a unique lens on history and community.
The festival’s central theme, “Boats and shuttles,” creatively weaves together two of Lake Como’s most treasured legacies: 200 years of boat service and centuries of silk production. Walking routes are thoughtfully designed to connect historical narratives, guiding participants along paths that once saw silk traders and boat builders at work.
The inaugural walk, fittingly titled “Merini and Volta united by a thread of silk,” sets the tone. It leads explorers through sites connected to the poet Alda Merini and the scientist Alessandro Volta, with poetry readings adding a lyrical touch to the journey. Where else might one ponder science and verse while surrounded by shimmering water and ancient villas? This year, participants can also explore best hiking trails that showcase the region’s breathtaking landscapes.
Over twenty municipalities around the lake are set to participate, each offering its own blend of local beauty and stories. Some routes are classic favorites, while others invite walkers to hidden corners, where the only crowds are centuries-old statues and curious ducks.
Not content to stick to dry land, the festival includes combined walking and boating experiences, letting participants glide across the lake on boats and shuttles that echo two hundred years of navigation. Additionally, the festival highlights the region’s diverse hiking trails, allowing participants to immerse themselves in the stunning natural beauty of Lake Como.
Community engagement is at the heart of the Lake Como Walking Festival. Alongside the walks, exhibitions and a photography competition encourage everyone—residents and newcomers alike—to capture and share the landscape’s unique charm. There’s a distinct satisfaction in spotting a perfect reflection or a patchwork of silk colors on an old loom and knowing your perspective could win a prize.
In every step and every snapshot, the festival celebrates Lake Como’s past and present. Whether one is a history buff, a poetry lover, or simply seeking fresh air and inspiration, the Lake Como Walking Festival 2026 offers a delightful blend of exploration and appreciation, skillfully connecting people to place through walking routes, boats and shuttles, and the enduring threads of local tradition.
