Milestone anniversaries don’t come around every day, and in 2026, BMW’s legendary M3 reached a major one: its 40th birthday. To celebrate, BMW pulled out all the stops at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, hosting a tribute that honored not only the M3’s high-speed achievements but also its transformation from a pure racing machine to a luxury sports car icon.
The original E30 M3, first shown to the world at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1985, quickly became a legend in its own right—thanks in large part to its roots in DTM racing.
Unveiled in 1985, the E30 M3 became a legend, its DTM racing roots shaping a legacy of pure driving excitement.
Back in the 1980s, BMW set out to create a car that could dominate the racetrack, and the E30 M3 was their answer. Developed to meet the strict rules of DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft), BMW had to build 5,000 road-going versions, making the E30 M3 a racing car you could actually drive to the grocery store—if you dared. Not only did it become the most successful DTM car ever, but it also laid the foundation for the M3’s enduring heritage as a thrilling sports car that balanced performance with everyday usability.
The anniversary event at Villa d’Este was more than just a walk down memory lane. BMW’s tribute showcased how the M3 has evolved over four decades. From the lightweight, no-nonsense E30 to today’s powerful, tech-laden G80, the M3’s evolution is a demonstration of BMW’s ability to blend racing DNA with luxury accommodations and innovation. Furthermore, the transformation mirrors the cultural landmark status that the M3 has achieved in the automotive world.
Attendees marveled at the display of models that traced this journey, each one representing a different chapter in the M3 story. Even the most casual car fans couldn’t help but be impressed by the car’s ability to reinvent itself, staying true to its racing roots while embracing new technologies and comforts.
BMW also used the celebration to look toward the future. With the current G80 M3 set to end production in February 2027, and the highly anticipated G84 waiting in the wings for a July 2028 debut, the M3’s heritage shows no signs of slowing down.
The 40th anniversary served as a reminder that while the M3 is a product of its racing past, it’s also a symbol of luxury and performance for new generations. Four decades in, the M3 continues to inspire, evolve, and—let’s be honest—make every twisty road a little more exciting.
